Colours of the harp strings and the musical scale

Harp strings are colour-coded according to the note on the musical scale so that you know where to place your fingers. In Europe, the standard code is:

Red: C; Blue or black (Bl): F; Plain string: A,B,D,E,G

or C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C

As they are arranged, the strings form the scale of C.

There are 8 notes in the Western musical scale:
the scale of C starts on C,
D is the second note,
E is the third,
F the fourth,
G the fifth and then the alphabet starts again, with
A the 6th,
B the 7th and
C as the 8th completes the scale.

So the sequence of strings is:

C D E F G A B C D E F etc.
